#9 Go SuRfInG

In the Hawaiian language, surfing is called he'e nalu which directly translates to wave sliding.  Surfing started in ancient Hawaii, but it was mostly done by the royalty.  It became more popular to others but the royalty still got the first choice of waves. Now its a recreation that everybody enjoys.

Surfing is just a classic Hawaii thing to do.  Interestingly Justin and I have never been surfing together, and unfortunately I wasn't able to go this time because surfing is on the "don't do" list for pregnant people.  We both enjoy surfing though, and we will miss being able to grab a board and catch some waves so we figured Justin needed to do this one last time before he trades it in for snowboarding.  

We went out to Diamond Head on the south shore, mostly because it is close and convenient.  Justin and our friend Paul took off on their boards and I stayed on the beach and watched them.  The waves were about 2-4 feet, so pretty small but the boys still had fun.  Normally, during the winter season, the north shore gets all the big waves, which is where most of the surfing competitions take place, and the south shore has smaller swells and then it reverses during the summer months.  

 This is a picture along the coast of the beach directly below Diamond Head.  In the distance you can see the  Gold Coast of Oahu where the multi-multi million dollar houses are located.

 It's hard to see any of the surfers out there, but there were quite a few people out surfing on this Aloha Friday evening.  It was a really beautiful night.

 Pretty sure the one on the left is Justin. It's always hard to tell because they all look 

the same from this distance.

Justin always says "A bad day of surfing is better than a good day working." 

I'm pretty sure you can't have a bad day surfing though :)
