Several weeks ago, Justin clipped his toenails too short and as a result, got an ingrown toenail. He tried to take care of it himself (because he is one that refuses to go to the doctor) using hydrogen peroxide and tape. For several days he tried this, continuing to go to work and he even went wakeboarding with it. As time progressed though, it started to become infected and super painful for him. I convinced him to go to the doctor when his entire toe was red and swollen and it looked like the infection was spreading, so on Monday we went down to Instacare to have it taken care of. The doctor gave him a shot through his toe, which looked like it hurt A LOT! And once it was numb they clipped out the end of his nail, gave him some antibiotics and sent him home with the assurance that it would be better by the next day. A couple days go by, and we notice that the infection isn't going away and kind of looks like it is getting worse, so we go back down to Instacare where a different doctor said that Justin is probably resistant to the antibiotic they first gave him, so she prescribed a new antibiotic but gave him the instructions to take two of the new antibiotic three times a day and one of the old antibiotic three times a day, plus some pain killers on top of that because he was still in a lot of pain. Thursday while at work, Justin was having a really hard time. His eyes were watering, his vision was blurry, he thought he was going blind, and he had blisters forming in his mouth and throat. He came home from work that night and he looked terrible, I felt so bad for him. He went to bed and said that he would go back to the doctor the next day, Friday, to see what was going on.
That weekend just happened to be the weekend we were going to bless our daughter in church and Justin's family was coming in that Friday and spending the weekend until Sunday when we were blessing her. So, Friday morning rolls around and Justin heads to Instacare by himself, while I started preparing some food for the blessing on Sunday. An hour later I get a call from Justin, who tells me that the doctor thinks he is having an allergic reaction to the antibiotic and they are rushing him to the Emergency Room because they are worried his skin is going to start falling off, his kidney's are failing, and he's going to have to stay there for a few days to be monitored! WHAT?!? I wanted so badly to rush down there and be with him, but we didn't want Kalea in the emergency room since she is so young, and Justin's parents were coming and we had a lot to do get ready for the blessing. And, being monitored for a few days meant he might still be in the hospital on Sunday, which meant a slight change in plans for the blessing. I was going crazy with worry!
But, Justin is a smooth talker, and after a few hours of monitoring and telling the doctor that he had family coming in and he had to bless his little girl on Sunday, the doctor agreed to release him as long as he drank A TON of water to flush out his kidney's and try to bring them back to normal levels. He was told to come in the next day and if he hadn't improved they were going to keep him no matter what. The poor kid looked horrible. He'll always be sexy to me, but he really looked terrible. The blisters in his mouth made his jaw all swollen and he could hardly talk and couldn't eat at all, he had bruises under his eyes which were also swollen and red and he really looked like he was in pain.
So, that night, Justin asked for a Priesthood blessing from his dad and my dad. It was a wonderful blessing and the Spirit was so strong from these amazing men. They blessed him with strength and courage, and also that he would be healed from all his infirmities. Justin continued drinking lots of water, and the next morning the blisters in his mouth were much, much better and he could talk better. He went down to the doctor for his checkup and when the results came back, his kidney's were 300% better and as close to normal as could be expected. He came home and by Saturday night, I could hardly tell that he had been through such an ordeal. It was yet another testimony of how powerful the Priesthood really is and what it can do if we just trust in the Lord.
So, on to the good part of the story with all the cute pictures!
While trying to find a blessing dress for Kalea, my mom pulled out from the closet, the dress that I was blessed in 25 years ago. My grandma had a friend of hers crochet it out of white yarn and it was beautiful. It had survived the years pretty well, there was some slight yellowing, but it still looked like it was in great condition and I thought it would be so much fun to have Kalea blessed in the same dress that I was blessed in, so we didn't bother looking any further.
It's a little bit 80's style with the big frills around the neck and arms, but she looked really cute in it. I enjoy photography, but I'm an amateur at it, so the pictures aren't super great, but she makes up for it because she is adorable.
Normally I'm not that into big frills and big headbands, but it completed the outfit and turned out pretty cute!
That Sunday morning was a little bit crazy. Our church starts at 9 and we had to get there early to fill out some paperwork. There was a bunch of people staying at the house and only one bathroom, which made things interesting. But everyone made it on time and everyone looked absolutely beautiful. It is such an indescribable feeling looking to the front of the church to see the most amazing man in the world looking so handsome in a nice suit, holding our adorable baby girl and surrounded by a large circle of men who all hold the Priesthood and whom I love so very, very much. It is so great to know that Kalea will be raised with such strong, supportive and loving men in her life and who will be such great examples for her, with qualities she can look for in a future husband. It's a powerful feeling.
The blessing was wonderful and Justin did such a great job. He is so wonderful with Kalea and she is lucky to have such an awesome daddy. I wish I could remember what was in the blessing and if anyone remembers anything, please tell me so I can write it down.
He blessed her to:
- Live up to her name and be a bright light to those around her and to build them up, be an example and show them the light of Christ.
- Be strong and healthy.
- Know that her parents love her and to know that she can always go to them for advice and help.
- Choose good friends who will help her make good choices.
- Have a keen mind and that she may always be a seeker of truth (that came up a couple times)
That's all I remember, but the Spirit was so strong there and it's a feeling that I will always remember.
Afterwards, there was a bunch of family and friends that gathered at the house for a luncheon. We just BBQ'd some hamburgers and hot dogs and had chips, salads, fruit and dessert. It is so neat to have so much support and love from everyone!
